2024 Dan R. Barrow Memorial Scholarship

Background–The American Massage Therapy Association New Mexico Chapter (AMTA-NM) is now accepting scholarship applications for the Dan R. Barrow Memorial scholarship. This scholarship honors longtime AMTA-NM member and past president, Dan R. Barrow, for his service to AMTA as a volunteer at both the chapter and national levels. As a renowned neuromuscular therapist and instructor and member of the NM Massage Therapy Licensing Board, Dan elevated and enhanced our profession with his heart and his touch.

Terms of the Scholarship

Purpose – this scholarship program is being established to serve AMTA members while advancing the art, science and practice of massage therapy. All funds must be used consistent with this mission and within the boundaries of state and federal laws, including Internal Revenue Service regulations.

Scholarship Value – there will be one recipient of the scholarship. The scholarship recipient will receive $500 that can be used toward continuing education in compliance with the requirements outlined below.

Eligibility Criteria – applicants must be an AMTA professional member in good standing and a licensed massage therapist in the State of New Mexico. Current members of the scholarship committee and chapter board of directors are not eligible.

Award Period – scholarship recipients may not re-apply for this scholarship for a 5 year period.

Criteria for Award – Recipient(s) will be selected by the chapter scholarship committee. Each candidate shall submit a completed application (below) that outlines their willingness to take their practice to the next level and explains how they would utilize the scholarship monies to further their education and provide elevated care to their clients.

Volunteer and community service history is encouraged and will be taken into consideration. The AMTA-NM board of directors will vote to approve the selection made by the committee.

Conditions of Scholarship – Scholarship funds must be used for continuing education (CE) classes related to massage therapy, or to attend any one of the following educational events:

  • AMTA National Convention
  • AMTA State Conventions
  • International Massage Therapy Research Conference

All requests to attend educational events/conferences shall be approved by AMTA-NM board of directors in conjunction with AMTA National.

Scholarship funds must be used within a 2-year time period between May 1, 2024 and April 30, 2026. The recipient(s) must register for at least one CE course within one (1) year from the date of the award. The award can be used for up to 3 CE courses (or conventions) not to exceed the maximum amount. Scholarship award funds will be paid directly to the CE instructor or the event registrar at the time of course registration. The recipient shall submit a copy of their CE certificate(s) to the AMTA-NM scholarship committee upon completion of the course or event.

AMTA-NM reserves the right to publish the name, city and business name of the winner in our chapter newsletter, email communications and Facebook page.

Announcement of Scholarship Recipient(s) – Scholarship recipeint(s) will be announced at the chapter’s  Annual Meeting April 14, 2024.
